Butterflies and Bees pollinate flowers. They help bring beauty back to this wild world.
Monarch Butterflies and Honey bees are rapidly losing habitat all through out Loudoun County. We are tearing down their homes in place to make new roads, office buildings, and houses. It is not in all of the headlines but it is a problem and we are trying to prevent it before it becomes a big one.
Facts on Honey Bees:
-The Queen Bee may lay up to 1,500 eggs per day for her 3-4 year life span. -Honey bees fly at 15mph. -To make one pound of honey the bees will visit up to 2 million flowers. -There can be 40,000 -60,000 bees in a bee hive in late spring to early summer. -Honey bees flap their wings 11,400 times per minute. -There are over 20,000 species of bees and only 4 make honey. Facts on Monarch Butterflies:
-The wings flap from 120-300 times per minute. -The Monarch butterfly can lay up to 250 eggs a day. -The orange on the butterflies wings indicate to predators that they may taste bad or be toxic. -These butterflies fly from 4-12 mph but with wind they are much faster. -Monarch butterflies can not fly in the rain (just like most insects) "Journey North: Monarch Butterfly."
