About Monarchs
Monarchs are known for their very dangerous 3000 mile migration journey from Canada to Mexico each year. The reason that these beautiful butterflies migrate is because they can't withstand the freezing weather in the north and their food can't grow, so they go to a warmer and more safe place to be. They can travel from 50 to 100 miles each day if all goes well. This journey generally takes 2 months but is gradually getting longer because their habitat is getting destroyed. We can definitely fix this problem by planting plants such as lavender and milkweed in school courtyards and neighborhoods. We had better act fast because the Monarch's population has decreased by 90% east of the rockies since 1995.
What is Happening?
The Monarch butterfly population is rapidly decreasing due to habitat loss. We are taking down plants that butterflies need in order to complete their migration journey.
